The 2001 Shiraz Smith's
Folly (15.6% alcohol) is fashioned from a selection of
the best Eden Valley barrels. A tour de force in
winemaking, it is a European-styled South Australian
Shiraz boasting an inky purple color in addition to
gorgeous aromas of ink, graphite, white flowers, and
blackberries. It is an intense, powerful yet remarkably
measured, restrained effort that holds everything
together with good structure and decent acidity. The
purity and persistence (the finish lasts nearly a
minute) are awesome. It should hit its peak in 2-3
years, and last for 15+. This is an impressive operation
that deserves attention from Australian wine
enthusiasts. Owner Peter Smith and winemaker Rolf Binder
(best known as the owner/winemaker of Veritas) are high
on the potential of Eden Valley, a cooler sub-region of
the Barossa. RP 95 points. |

96 points Robert Parker - "A blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon
(26-year-old vines) and 70% Mourvedre (61-year-old vines), the
2003 Clio spent 26 months in French and American oak. Its deep
purple color is accompanied by classic aromas of creme de cassis
intermixed with licorice, espresso roast, chocolate, and toasty
oak. Its broad, intensely flavored, super-opulent personality
offers up great fruit, plenty of glycerin, and a heady, long
finish. Approachable now, it should be at its best in 2-5 years,
and drink well for 10-15. Well-known Australian winemaker, Chris
Ringland, oversees the winemaking at this estate, fashioning
intriguing reds with great depth as well as richness. These
wines have broken all the parameters previously established by

touch of oak, this fleshy, stylized, yet authoritatively

Points. A huge wine that doesn't feel as big as it is:
blueberry, purple plum and currant fruit, shaded on the
edges with sweet spices, sage and a touch of creamy oak.

- There are 700 cases of the 2002
Shiraz Greenock Block, a classic, old style Australian
Shiraz aged in American oak. Its deep plum/purple color is
accompanied by damp earth, pepper, fig, and black currant
characteristics. Chewy, intensely concentrated, and nearly
over the top, it is not for those who seek elegant,
light-bodied wines with restrained fruit flavors. This
muscular, macho-styled red should drink well for 10-12
