Visited
Beaucastel during
99 Rhone Wine Experience. A long time favorite going back to our
first introduction to this wine with the 1978 vintage which we still
have in our cellar. Also holding some large format bottles from the
fabulous 1981 vintage for Erin's birth year, and the 1989, 1993 and
1995 vintages. I was trying to buy some of the 1981 vintage for Erin
and found a whole section of it in their cellar (below) but they
wouldn't part with it. Ironically Ralph Sands at K&L in Redwood City
came up with several magnums a short time later. |

Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-pape 1995
Magnum - RM 93, RP 93,
WS 92 - Intense forward blackberry, spice, a hint of anise, tea and
firm fine polished tannins on the long finish. Tasted w/ LC & KY of
TS w/ BJB, DM, DW, and CB at product review - teaming dinner - BYOB
at Riva Naperville.
RP Review - Parker:93
- '...A medium to full-bodied wine, with a
boatload of tannin, |
considerable grip and
structure, and a weighty feel in the mouth, this appears to be a
classic vin de garde made in the style of the 1978 Beaucastel...'
Wine Spectator:92
'...shows
the backward intensity of youth, with a dark color and initially
reductive aromas. But be patient--behind the firm tannins there's a
core of ripe, rich plum, with notes of game, herb and mineral that
promise complexity with age.' |

2006 -
Château de
Beaucastel
Châteauneuf du Pape
1981 - RM 88 WS 96 - The parade of 81's continues as we count down to
the big day. This CDP was medium bodied and austere in colour with a slight
rust on the edges revealing its age. Earthy leather overtook the black
cherry and berry fruit. WS Oct 15,
1991 Review. "A giant of a wine. Decant a few hours before serving if you
want to drink it now. Deep in color, with super-ripe game, chocolate and
tobacco aromas. Full-bodied, with a thick, massive fruit structure and tons
of tannins. Has a gigantic finish." |
Feb 17, 2006 - Château
de Beaucastel
Châteauneuf du Pape 1995
- RM 92 WS 92- Tasted from magnum.
Not much nose but full bodied, dark colour, complex but well balanced and
harmoniously polished - dark berry fruit, plum, smoke and herb with focused
firm tannin undertones. Cellar selection tasted at Mon Ami Gabi in
Oak Brook, thanks to their corkage policy; Birthday celebration dinner for L
with Johnny & Erin, Ryan & Michelle, Alec & Marlene.

Dec, 19, 2004 - Chateau
de
Beaucastel Chateauneuf
du Pape 1993 - WS 86 RM 87 Tasted from magnum. Visited this Chateau
during our
Rhone Wine Experience. Softer and lighter than most CDP's reflecting a
more austere vintage, earthy black cherry and anise are predominant with
only a hint of the typical spicy pepper.

Mar 23,
2004 - Château de Beaucastel
Châteauneuf du Pape 1993
- WS 86 RM 86 $37 Earthy cherry
and anise with a hint of pepper - losing some of the body and structure
perhaps due to age.
|
Sept 5, 2003 - Coudoulet de
Beaucastel Côtes
du Rhône 2000 RM 83 A bit awkward
with a forward berry giving way to a earthy tar taste. This doesn't measure
up to its big brother CDP. Tasted at
La Sardine in
west loop.

Chateau Beaucastel
Chateauneuf du Pape 1995
- WS 92 $45 Nov 15, 1998 Review "This rich red still shows the backward
intensity of youth, with a dark color and initially reductive aromas. But be
patient--behind the firm tannins there's a core of ripe, rich plum, with
notes of game, herb and mineral that promise complexity with age. Best after
2000. (TM)"

Chateau Beaucastel
Chateauneuf du Pape 1993
- WS 86 $37 WS Nov 15, 1996 Review - "The cherry, licorice and black
pepper flavors are true to form, but dominated by firm tannins at this
stage. Well made and should show better in 1997."
|
Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 1989 - WS 97
Cellar Selection $47 WS Oct 15, 1991 Review - "Perhaps the greatest
Beaucastel ever produced. Has the class and structure of a great vintage
of Mouton-Rothschild. Deep, inky in color, with intense herb, plum, game and
spice aromas, this full-bodied wine has an explosion of fruit and an iron
backbone. Try the beginning of next century."

Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 1981 - WS 96
$50 WS Oct 15, 1991 Review. "A giant of a wine. Decant a few hours before
serving if you want to drink it now. Deep in color, with super-ripe game,
chocolate and tobacco aromas. Full-bodied, with a thick, massive fruit
structure and tons of tannins. Has a gigantic finish."
