"Another great wine from arguably California's best
Cabernet maker. Bold, rich and massive, with tiers of
plum, blackberry, vanilla bean, spice and tobacco
flavors that unfold to reveal a wine of uncommon depth,
complexity, finesse and, yes, even grace. Best from 1998
through 2008."

"Aging extremely well, this is rich,
sleek and elegant, with a wide range of black cherry,
anise, currant, plum and earth notes that offer depth
and complexity, finishing in a long aftertaste. Tannins
are softening. Drink now through 2007."
94 points Robert Parker: "The 1990 Cabernet
Sauvignon-Special Selection appears to be the best
Caymus has produced since 1986 and 1985. Two thousand,
six-bottle cases will be released in February, 1994. The
wine offers a saturated, dark purple color, and a rich,
spicy, oaky nose backed up by generous quantities of
jammy blackcurrants. Ripe, highly extracted, and
full-bodied, with copious amounts of sweet tannin and
layers of fruit, this is a knock-out,
flamboyantly-styled Cabernet for drinking over the next
15 or more years."

WE 94 -
A classic Cinq Cépages, the
2003 vintage offers the signature chocolate-covered cherry
and boysenberry aromas that have come to define this
flagship Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. Lush, elegant and
gracefully balanced, the wine delivers sweet plum and dark
berry flavors and an exotic floral note that wraps around
big, juicy tannins. This highly concentrated wine has
beautiful oak integration and a lushness throughout that
leads to a lingering finish. |
|
2002 - "The 2002 Cinq Cepages is impressive. It boasts a
deep ruby/purple hue as well as aromas of cedar, black
currants, sweet cherries, licorice, and smoky oak. Medium to
full-bodied, authoritatively flavored, elegant and
impressively long with a velvety texture, it is already
delicious and evolved but should drink well for at least
another 12-14 years. RP 92 - There are some terrific values
in the Chateau St. Jean portfolio. People complain, with
justification, about the high prices of the finest
California wines, but this winery releases some offerings
that are actually under priced for what’s in the bottle. The
values in this portfolio seem obvious, and the winery is to
be applauded for that." - Wine Advocate |

Wine
Spectator 92: "Beautifully crafted, dark, rich and layered,
with blackberry, cherry, plum and wild berry fruit that
zooms across the palate, holding a tight focus and finishing
with a long, complex aftertaste. The tannins firm up nicely
on the finish." Drink now through 2011. –JL
Robert Parker 90 notes: "The 2001 Cinq Cepages is an
outstanding effort. A dark ruby/purple color is followed by
an elegant nose of cranberries, cherries, red and black
currants, smoke, and herbs. This elegant, medium to
full-bodied 2001 is ideal for drinking over the next 12-13
years."
Wine Enthusiast 93: "A lovely Cab, elegant and harmonious.
Strikes an even balance between cherry and blackberry
flavors, smoky oak, sweet herbs, cocoa and spice. The
tannins are beautifully ripe and soft. Of all these
qualities, balance is foremost." |

Advocate - December 2003 -
The perplexing 2000 Cinq
Cepages Proprietary Red (a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon,
10% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit
Verdot) reveals mid-ninety point aromatics ... truly a
splendid bouquet that reminded me of a high-class Bordeaux
St.-Emilion (dried herbs, tobacco smoke, licorice,
chocolate, black currants, and cherries). However, the
stunning aromas do not follow through in the mouth. This
medium-bodied, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2000 starts off sweet
and authoritatively on the palate, but the finish is narrow
and tannic. It is typical of the 2000 vintage, which can
deliver considerable fragrance, but often lacks texture and
reveals a narrow, constricted aftertaste. Drink this 2000
now or cellar it for a decade.
90 points, Wine Enthusiast -
May 2004 -
This fine wine, which is at its best
now, offers polished flavors of currants, blackberries and
herbs, with smoky nuances from oak. It is smooth and
polished in the mouth, with a good balance of acids and
tannins. Not an ager, but complex and elegant. — S.H.
90 points, Wine Spectator -
October 2003 -
Smooth and harmonious, with ripe,
rich, supple plum and blackberry fruit, shaded by cedar,
anise, black cherry and spice attributes. Firms up and
flexes its tannic strength on the finish. Very well-made.
Drink now through 2010. 15,500 cases made. (JL) |

Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages "The dark ruby/purple-colored
1996 Cinq Cepages (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance
Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot) exhibits a
moderately intense nose of black cherries, chocolate, smoke,
dried herbs, and toasty oak. As reported last year, it
appears to be California's version of a big, rich St.-Emilion.
Offering elegance and finesse along with copious quantities

best after 1999. A blend: 76 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 14
percent Cabernet Franc, 5 percent Merlot, 4 percent Malbec,
1 percent Petit Verdot. RP 97 - "To my mind, the Cinq

1994 Cinq Cepages (a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10%

'Ethos' Reserve
- In the world of wine, Ethos represents the
pinnacle tier of Chateau Ste. Michelle. The Ethos
Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah reflect the
winemaker’s vision of old world complexity and elegance with
concentrated Washington fruit. These wines are the ultimate
winemaker expression and made from the finest fruit of the
vintage. Produced in extremely limited quantities
representing no more than 1% of a vintage, our Ethos wines
are crafted to represent the best of a variety from our best
vineyards, including our own vineyards of Cold Creek and
Canoe Ridge Estate. The finest blocks within our top
vineyards are identified based on their quality history,
then farmed within winemaker specifications to insure the
best fruit possible from each site. These small lots of
fruit are harvested and vinified separately. This allows our
winemakers to combine the distinct characteristics from each
vineyard into layered, complex, refined wines that showcase
the power of Washington fruit. |

2006 |
Winery estate notes - "This elegant 2006 Clark-Claudon
Estate Cabernet takes its place among a string of beautiful,
low production artisan wines. It greets with a deep purple
color & layered aromas of ripe plums, sweet cherries, wild
black berries & cedar with hints of roasted almonds &
vanilla. In the mouth the wine is velvety & soft while fresh
& beautifully balanced with a fine structure & well
integrated tannins. Layers of flavors unwind revealing ripe
black varietal fruit with hints of crushed stones, roasted
coffee and sweet oak. The finish is long with hints of
asian spice, minerality, dark cigar box & chocolate. The
bright aromas & velvety smoothness encourages this wine to
be drunk now, while the beautiful structure assures that it
can age for a long, long time." |
|
2005 |
Winery estate notes - "The 2005
Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, darker than the most recent
vintages, presents with heightened aromas of cassis,
violets, fine cedar, & bright black cherries. This full
bodied wine fills front, middle and back pallet with round,
complex layers of fruit, spice and fine textured French Oak.
Give this wine a chance to breath or allow it to evolve for
a long, long time; well balanced, elegant and perfectly
integrated, it leaves a long signature finish of roasted
chocolate; Yes, 2005 was a very good year! Drink now-2025
The 2005 is the first Estate Cabernet influenced by new
winemaker, Douglas Danielak. Instrumental in making
the final winemaking & blending decisions, his touch is
evident in this classically beautiful Cabernet."

|
2004 |
Winery estate notes - "Using
only 70% of our production our 2004 Estate bottling is a
pure varietal expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. A compelling
mixture of cassis, violet and cherry dominate the aromas
while 24 months of aging in French oak imparts a
fine-grained texture and lingering chocolate finish. The
hallmark of this vintage is an elegant, silky texture that
is imparted from mature vines and gentle handling in the
cellar. At the table enjoy this wine with richly flavored
beef dishes, lamb, earthy wild mushrooms and savory cheese.
Drink now-2020." |

WE 91 - From lower Howell
Mountain, this 100% Cab has big time tannins and tremendous
authority. It is slightly rustic now, with an edgy feel, but

raspberries, and plums. This tannic, backward 2001 possesses
a Bordeaux-like structure as well as a deep, rich,

give it 3-4 more years of bottle age and drink it over the
following two decades.

Neither up-front nor
accessible, readers will need a degree of patience, although
it would not be infanticide to drink it now. A serious,
concentrated, opaque purple-colored effort, it boasts a
moderately intense nose of pure cassis, gravel, vanillin,
and blackberries. Full-bodied and impressively built, this
deep, powerful, concentrated Cabernet begs for cellaring. It
is the second impressive effort from this newcomer to the
high end Cabernet Sauvignon sweepstakes. Anticipated
maturity: 2005-2020. Bravo! |

July 6, 1999 - RP 93 - "A brilliant successor
to the 1995, dark purple color, followed by classic
Bordeaux-like bouquet of cassis, lead pencil and smoky new
oak. A wine of considerable complexity and elegance, with
outstanding purity, richness and nicely integrated wood and
tannin.. Can be drunk early or cellared for 15+ years.
Impressive!" 93 points Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, August
1999 404 cases produced. |

July 6, 1999 - RP 93+ - "Another limited
production (300 cases) wine made from a vineyard on the
eastern side of Howell Mountain, this brilliantly made
Cabernet suggests this winery knows what to do with top
quality fruit. While the 1995 will be hard to find, readers
who are interested in profound California Cabernet
Sauvignons should seek out future releases. This opaque
purple-colored wine boasts knock-out aromatics of smoke,
charcoal, black currants, lead pencil, minerals, and high
quality French oak. Impressive on the palate, with a classy
richness married to well-integrated wood, acidity, and
tannin, this is a full-bodied, fabulously rich, expressive,
impeccably-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated
maturity: now-2015." 93+ points Robert Parker, Wine
Advocate, August 1998, 298 cases produced. |

RP 90 - The
1989 Clerc-Milon is a wonderfully hedonistic wine. It is
deep ruby, with an intense, roasted, smoky bouquet of plums
and currants. This full-bodied wine is packed with fruit, is
chewy and opulent as well as very soft and alcoholic. In
spite of the precocious impression, the tannin levels are
high, similar in fact to the 1986. For the first time in my
experience, I actually prefer the Clerc-Milon to
Mouton-Rothschild! A great value. Anticipated maturity:
Now-2010. |
|
1986 |
Dec 10, 2005
Robert Parker - The 1986 is among the
greatest Clerc-Milon in my memory, and continues to
represent one of the better values of the 1986 vintage. Dark
ruby/purple with a super bouquet of sweet, toasty new oak,
plums, black currants, licorice, and cedar, on the palate,
the wine is very concentrated, rich and powerful, yet
atypically soft and fleshy for a 1986. While this wine
should age well for another two decades, it can be drunk
much earlier than many of the 1986 Pauillacs. It is a
sleeper of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-2006. Last
tasted, 1/91.

- Robert Parker : 84/100 (Ed 1998) The 1982 Clerc-Milon is a
charming, forward, ripe, fruity wine with an open-knit,
lovely bouquet of ripe berry fruit, and oaky, vanillin
scents. Medium to full bodied, with soft, light tannins,
this wine is ready to drink.
- Wine Spectator: 86/100 (11-1998) Fading a bit, but
delicious. Dark ruby-garnet color. Wild raspberry and
blackberry, with a hint of cedar. Medium-bodied, with
medium, slightly drying tannins and a tobacco and berry
finish. |
|
1981 |
Wine
Spectator (15/03/1992) : 96 - Superbly made, giving
the essence of Cabernet Sauvignon. Lots of cassis and earth
aromas and flavors, spiced with excellent new wood; there is
a classic backbone of well-integrated tannins.

the vintage and probably the best Clos de Marquis I have ever
tasted, this wine could easily compete with many of the
vintage's classified growths. Dense, opaque purple-coloured,
with créme de cassis, vanilla and cherry notes, medium to full
body, an unctuous texture, low acidity and a more evolved style
than its bigger sibling. Léoville Las Cases, this dense, chewy
and remarkably concentrated and stylish wine should be at its
best between 2005 and 2018." 91/100pts (Robert Parker - Wine

- 90 pts - Inky ruby. Pungent, almost medicinal aromas of
bitter cherry, blackberry, iodine, violet and lavender. Fat,
round and extracted, the rich dark berry, tobacco and
espresso flavors well framed by dusty, fine-grained tannins.

92-95 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
December 2005, The consistently fine Right Bank
cuvee is an homage to Bordeaux’s Pomerols and St.-Emilions.
Usually a core blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40%
Merlot, there are approximately 625 cases of this
terrific offering. Like all Anderson’s wines, it spends
24-30 months in French oak before being bottled without
filtration. Fashioned from a slightly different blend of
55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc, the 2004 Right Bank’s
deep blue/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of
vanilla bean, espresso roast, chocolate, plums, creme de
cassis, and licorice. Opulent, full-bodied, and
seriously-endowed with no hard edges, this beauty should
drink well for 10-12 years.

Parker 95 Points - The Honour, a dense off-the-chart,
potent Shiraz that spent 18 months in French oak. Readers
looking for restrained Euro-styled wines should steer clear
of this behemoth. It offers blackberry and cassis fruit
intermixed with lead pencil shavings, smoke and high quality
toasty oak. Full-bodied, massively rich, dense and well
balanced for a wine of this weight and power. It should be
at its finest in 2-3 years and last for 10-15. |

1994
- Robert Parker's Wine
Advocate: 91 points
- "A word of admiration and praise is in order for Bruno
Prats. One of St.-Estephe's most forward thinking producers,
Prats is never content with merely making outstanding wine.
Over the last few years he has improved Cos d'Estournel,
already one of the great wines of Bordeaux, by eliminating
any filtration at bottling, and replacing the standard paper
label with one made of plastic so it will not disintegrate
in damp, humid cellars. Additionally, the quality of his
wines in such difficult vintages as 1992 and 1993 has been
remarkable. Readers should also note that a second wine, the
beautifully packaged Les Pagodes de Cos, has been
implemented with the 1994 vintage. It appears to be a fine
second wine. While tasting through Cos d'Estournel's wines,
it was interesting to taste the unfiltered 1994 against the
same cuvee of wine that was put through the normal
filtration. The filtered cuvee was an excellent wine (I
rated it 88), but as Bruno Prats and several other people at
the tasting could easily see, it had less opacity, color,
and aromatic interest, and far less volume and mid-palate.
Most Bordeaux chateaux continue to do too much fining and
filtering, but some of the more seriously run estates are
curtailing the most abusive clarification procedures, and
are finally opening their minds to the negative impact too
much fining and filtration can cause. Sadly, most of my
colleagues have fallen hook, line, and sinker for the
standard response from oenologists and producers on this
issue "fining and filtration have no effect on a wine.""
Feb/97
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
89-92 points - "The 1994 and 1995 vintages of Cos
d'Estournel are slightly different in style, but are
virtually equivalent in qualitative terms. The 1994 is one
of the top wines of the vintage. It reveals a dense, opaque
purple color, and a ripe, sweet nose of black fruits, smoke,
vanillin, and licorice. Extremely well-made, this medium to
full-bodied wine possesses surprising size, yet
accessibility, and admirable purity. It will require 2-4
years of cellaring after its release, and promises to keep
for 20 years." Apr/96
Wine Spectator: 91
points - "Outstanding quality for the vintage. A full-bodied
Bordeaux that offers wonderful aromas of tobacco, berry and
cedar, loads of refined tannins and a long, flavorful
finish. Better from 2000. 22,000 cases made. (JS)" Jan/97 |

1989 - 95 points
Wine Spectator. According to Robert Parker: "The 1989 Cos
d'Estournel will, in all likelihood, prove to be an
outstanding wine... It is a medium-bodied, rich,
concentrated wine displaying an impressive color, and a nose
of super-ripe black fruits, toasty oak, and licorice. It
tastes like a blend of the 1985 and 1982... The finish is
long, alcoholic, and lush." |

1986 - 95 points
Robert Parker: "Highly extracted wine, with a black/ruby
color and plenty of toasty, smoky notes in its bouquet that
suggest ripe plums and licorice. Evolving at a glacial pace,
it exhibits massive, huge, ripe, extremely concentrated
flavors with impressive depth and richness. It possesses
more power, weight, and tannin than the more opulent and
currently more charming 1985. Anticipated maturity:

- "This is an explosive,
succulent, disarmingly thick, opulent effort, the dark
purple Cabernet Sauvignon is a hedonist's dream. It offers a
combination of powerful black cherry and cassis flavors
presented in a flamboyant, full-bodied style with
extravagant layers of fruit, glycerin, and extract. New oak
aging is noticeable, but its impact is subtle. The tannin is
well-concealed by a wealth of fruit. Drink this beauty over
the next two decades." Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine
Advocate
(12/23/00) 94 points.
James Laube, The Wine Spectator (10/31/00) - 96
points "An immense yet elegant wine—dark, ripe, rich,
flavorful—with concentrated currant, black cherry, anise and
wild berry, turning rich and polished on the finish. Best
from 2002 through 2012." |

Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 1997
- RM 90 RP 94 WS 96 - Perhaps this wine was 'closed' at this time. I
found it a bit uninspiring relative to or not up to the hype and
hyperbole of the pundits ratings. Too early? Let's hope so as I have
several more bottles so time will tell. (This seemed to be the case with some
other recent tastings of 1997 Napa Cabs - 97 BV Tapestry below). It was
good never-the-less - balanced, medium bodied, black
cherry, black berry, anise and leather with moderate firm tannin and a hint of oak. Tasted w/ L,
Ryan & Michelle with beef tenderloin on the deck. -

Napa Valley La Palette Red Wine
2005 - Karen Culler's
La Palette is a blend of 91 Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit
Verdot. It is densely saturated on both nose and palate,
definitely due to the addition of the Petit Verdot. The wine
is rich in flavor with a touch of sweet black cherry fruit
and cassis and a touch of toasty vanilla. The wine is lush
and elegant and flows over the tongue like expensive silk!
This well-structured wine could use some time in the cellar,
although after decanting for a good hour, this wine start
showing its true colors! Should age well for a good 10
years! 900 cases produced |
