One of my favorite wines,
I have collected the Balmoral Syrah since the 1994 vintage. Prices crept
up in 1999 but I am glad to see it being released at discounted prices
in 2000 such that it is one of the better bargains in the marketplace. |

Estate Balmoral Mclaren Vale Syrah 1996 - RM 89, WS 92 - Forward,

December 31, 2007 - Rosemount Estates Balmoral McLaren Vale
Syrah 1997 - RM 92 - The
'97 distinguishes itself and is one of my favorites from my vertical of
this selection and it doesnt disappoint on its tenth anniversary. Deep
lead pencil purple/red colour, and an intense aroma of perfume and fruit
- deeply concentrated plum and blackberry fruit with a touch of vanilla
and sweet cherry - initially tightly wound then opens to be smooth, with
a long fruit-filled finish. Tinge of tight tannins and acid that opens
into velvet finish shows long life ahead. Tasted w/ L, BYOB at
Angeli's Restaurant,
our favorite neighborhood bistro. |
June 10, 2007 - Rosemount Balmoral McLaren Vale Syrah 1997
- RM 86 - Earthy and a slight bit corked or perhaps end of life? Will
try another soon from the cellar. Tasted w/ L at current favorite
neighborhood restaurant Angelis. BYOB from the home
cellar. |
March 18, 2007 -
Rosemount Estates McLaren Vale Balmoral Syrah 1998 - RM 93 - Dark
garnet purple color. Full forward flavor of currant, black raspberry,
blueberry, a hint of earthy cedar and dill on the silky tannin finish. |
Feb 13, 2007 - Rosemount Balmoral McLaren Vale
Shiraz 1997 - RM 90 - Dark, medium bodied, smoky, earthy blackberry and
anise. |
January 4, 2007 -
Rosemount Balmoral McLaren Vale Shiraz 1995 -
RM 90 $39 -

plum fruit, with spice, anise, smoke and tar on the long full finish. |
June 11, 2006 -
Rosemount GSM
(Grenache Syrah Mouvedre) McLaren Vale 1997 - RM 87 - Not quite as
bright and full flavored as the 02 below but similar profile of
blackberry, mineral, spice and a touch of plum on the finish. The 97 is
more modest in fruit but also in the metallic minerality which tended to
detract from the 02. |
June 9, 2006 - Rosemount GSM
(Grenache Syrah Mouvedre) McLaren Vale 2002 - RM 87 - Huge bouquet.
Flavors of intense
blackberry, mineral, spice and a touch of blueberry on the finish. This
wine is a decent value at $15. Its a great value at $10 where it is
currently available at Trader Joe's. |
Feb 21, 2006 -
Rosemount Balmoral McLaren Vale Syrah 1995 -
WS 92/RM 89 $35 Dark full
flavor, berry, blueberry, plum fruit, with spice and anise. Showing age and
a slight bit of astringency on opening but opened and softened with a long
full magnificent finish.
|
Feb 3, 2006 -
Rosemount Balmoral McLaren Vale Syrah 1995 - WS 92 RM 92 - Dark intense
ultra-ripe raisiny, smoky loganberry, predominates over plum and a hint of
blueberry. |
Sept 1, 2005 -
Rosemount Balmoral McLaren Vale Syrah 2000 - RM 91 - This wine is a
great value at Binny's price of $27. Aromatic, flavorful - black raspberry,
black cherry, cassis, tar and cedar that turns to an aftertaste of currant
and a hint of plum. |
May 7, 2004 - Rosemount Estate Balmoral McLaren Vale Syrah
2000 -
WS 93 RM 93 $53/$29 Same review as below except add an
emerging pepper on the front palate that gives way to huge fruit. |
Mar 12, 2004 - Rosemount Estate Balmoral McLaren Vale Syrah

Vale Syrah 1999, RM 92, WS 93 SS $53, Huge forward long
mouth full of currant, plum, blackberry and anise. Bigger and more robust
than other years. Try it and see why this is one of my perennial favorites
- even better this year! |

Balmoral McLaren Vale
Syrah 1997 ($37) RM 93-94!
One of my favorites. Deep lead pencil purple/red colour, and an
intense aroma of perfume and fruit - deeply concentrated plum and
blackberry fruit with a touch of vanilla and sweet cherry - initially
tightly wound then opens to be smooth, with an incredible long
fruit-filled finish. Tinge of tight tannins and acid that opens into

Nov 23, 2002 - Rosemount Estate Balmoral McLaren Vale Syrah
1998 and 19991998 WE 90 RM 90 1999 WS 93
RM 91 $45 Binny's has these on sale for $27. One of my favorites - deep
purple red colour - concentrated blackberry and plum, clove and spices.
The 98 is more closed and dry. Not as forward fruit as the last couple
years but very good none-the-less.

Dec 14, 2000 - 1998 Rosemount Estates McLaren Vale GSM ($24)
(RM91) (Label)
(GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre, a southern Rhone
style wine). Licorice, black cherry, black berry - smooth, polished - good
value. |
May 2, 2001 - Rosemount Estate 1997 Mudgee Mountain Blue
Shiraz Cabernet (75-25%) Aus $40 (WS90 RM91) Add a touch of that
distinctive McLaren Vale blueberry taste to currant and plum with moderate
tannins. I'd like to do a comparison tasting between this and the Silverado
Merlot below - both delicious. |
March 19, 2001 - 1997 Robert Craig
Mt Veeder CS (RM 92WS 94) (WSCS); Rosemount Balmoral Syrah; 1997 BV
Tapestry - (See my earlier reviews below of these - some of my favorite
wines.) - What a trio of great wines from T Cook's WS Award of
Excellence wine list! The Craig was over-powered early by the dueling fruit
bombs but opened up eventually to reveal full rich tight but soft on the
finish cherry, berry, and spicy chocolate. |
June 14, 2000 - Rosemount Estate Coonawara Cabernet
Sauvignon Reserve 1997 - ($46 at Chardonnay rest in OMA - retails for
about $24) Rosemount, a major Australian producer had a great 1997.
While the Cab isn't as smooth or as intense in fruit as the Balmoral, it is
40% less in price. Those same flavors of plum and blackberry fruit are
punctuated by smoke and currant with a touch of caramel. RM 90 See history
and winemaker's comments on their
website. Label.

June 2, 2000 - Rosemount Estate
Balmoral Syrah 1997 ($37) Wow. Bam!
Deep lead pencil purple/red colour, and an intense aroma of perfume and
fruit - deeply concentrated plum and blackberry fruit with a touch of
vanilla and sweet cherry - initially tightly wound then opens to be smooth,
with an incredible long fruit-filled finish. Tinge of tight tannins and acid
that opens into velvet finish shows long life ahead. RM 93-94! I didn't
abstain for a month, just enjoyed previously reviewed favorites or several
not worth writing about. You'll look long and hard for this intense
power-packed fruit finish. |
March 21, 2000 - Rosemount Estates Balmoral Syrah 1997 -
Smooth polished flavorful with blueberry, blackberry, plum, anise
and a hint of tobacco finish. $39. |
