|
2005 - Sept 11, 2009, October 9, 2009 |
|
2003 -
May
18, 2008 - WE 94 - A classic Cinq Cépages, the
2003 vintage offers the signature chocolate-covered cherry
and boysenberry aromas that have come to define this
flagship Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. Lush, elegant and
gracefully balanced, the wine delivers sweet plum and dark
berry flavors and an exotic floral note that wraps around
big, juicy tannins. This highly concentrated wine has
beautiful oak integration and a lushness throughout that
leads to a lingering finish. |
|
2002 - "The 2002 Cinq Cepages is impressive. It boasts a
deep ruby/purple hue as well as aromas of cedar, black
currants, sweet cherries, licorice, and smoky oak. Medium to
full-bodied, authoritatively flavored, elegant and
impressively long with a velvety texture, it is already
delicious and evolved but should drink well for at least
another 12-14 years. RP 92 - There are some terrific values
in the Chateau St. Jean portfolio. People complain, with
justification, about the high prices of the finest
California wines, but this winery releases some offerings
that are actually under priced for what’s in the bottle. The
values in this portfolio seem obvious, and the winery is to
be applauded for that." - Wine Advocate |

2001 -
Jan 21, 2006 - Wine
Spectator 92: "Beautifully crafted, dark, rich and layered,
with blackberry, cherry, plum and wild berry fruit that
zooms across the palate, holding a tight focus and finishing
with a long, complex aftertaste. The tannins firm up nicely
on the finish." Drink now through 2011. –JL
Robert Parker 90 notes: "The 2001 Cinq Cepages is an
outstanding effort. A dark ruby/purple color is followed by
an elegant nose of cranberries, cherries, red and black
currants, smoke, and herbs. This elegant, medium to
full-bodied 2001 is ideal for drinking over the next 12-13
years."
Wine Enthusiast 93: "A lovely Cab, elegant and harmonious.
Strikes an even balance between cherry and blackberry
flavors, smoky oak, sweet herbs, cocoa and spice. The
tannins are beautifully ripe and soft. Of all these
qualities, balance is foremost." |

89 points, Robert Parker, Wine
Advocate - December 2003 -
The perplexing 2000 Cinq
Cepages Proprietary Red (a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon,
10% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit
Verdot) reveals mid-ninety point aromatics ... truly a
splendid bouquet that reminded me of a high-class Bordeaux
St.-Emilion (dried herbs, tobacco smoke, licorice,
chocolate, black currants, and cherries). However, the
stunning aromas do not follow through in the mouth. This
medium-bodied, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2000 starts off sweet
and authoritatively on the palate, but the finish is narrow
and tannic. It is typical of the 2000 vintage, which can
deliver considerable fragrance, but often lacks texture and
reveals a narrow, constricted aftertaste. Drink this 2000
now or cellar it for a decade.
90 points, Wine Enthusiast -
May 2004 -
This fine wine, which is at its best
now, offers polished flavors of currants, blackberries and
herbs, with smoky nuances from oak. It is smooth and
polished in the mouth, with a good balance of acids and
tannins. Not an ager, but complex and elegant. — S.H.
90 points, Wine Spectator -
October 2003 -
Smooth and harmonious, with ripe,
rich, supple plum and blackberry fruit, shaded by cedar,
anise, black cherry and spice attributes. Firms up and
flexes its tannic strength on the finish. Very well-made.
Drink now through 2010. 15,500 cases made. (JL) |

Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages "The dark ruby/purple-colored
1996 Cinq Cepages (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance
Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot) exhibits a
moderately intense nose of black cherries, chocolate, smoke,
dried herbs, and toasty oak. As reported last year, it
appears to be California's version of a big, rich St.-Emilion.
Offering elegance and finesse along with copious quantities
of fruit, glycerin, and flavor, this medium to full-bodied
wine has evolved nicely over the last year, and can be drunk

RP 90: "In my
October tasting both 1993 Cabernets were more tannic and
closed than the 1992s. The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa
Valley is one of the more tannic and backward wines I have
tasted from Silver Oak. Now that it has been bottled, it has
closed down, displaying far less lushness and obvious
concentration than it did last year. The color remains a
healthy dark ruby/purple, and the nose offers earthy, toasty
new oak, and sweet black fruit aromas. Tight, yet powerful
and rich, this full-bodied, dense, atypically backward
Cabernet Sauvignon does not possess Silver Oak's usual
approachability and precociousness. Nevertheless, this wine
has plenty of merit. It should drink well after 3-5 years of
cellaring, and last for 15+ years." (12/96) |

The
1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley offers up a whiff of
herbs in its tight nose, followed by chocolatey, spicy,
black-cherry, and cassis flavors, an exotic, medium to
full-bodied, concentrated palate, and moderate tannin in the
lusty finish. It does not possess the definition and structure
of the Napa cuvee, but it is more forward and fleshy. These
All-American Cabernet Sauvignons continue to be "can't miss"
propositions with the majority of Cabernet lovers. The
full-bodied 1993 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers
peppery, blackcurrant-scented aromas, as well as gobs of
cherry and cassis fruit. Approachable now, it should drink
well for 10-20 years as I detect more tannin and structure. |

ostentatious, sweet vanillin, herb, and blackcurrant-scented
nose, and gobs of rich, herb-tinged, juicy fruit, the opulent
texture that Silver Oak routinely obtains. There is plenty of

This
is a huge, dark brooding wine with terrific extract for a
Pinot Noir. Like many Oregon Pinots this one has real
Burgundy style as opposed to the flamboyant, fruit bomb
American style. Connoisseur’s Guide had this to say about
the previous vintage:
2002
SINEANN Pinot Noir Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine
Volume 28 Issue 12: October 2004 Rated 91 -
“ Nicely concentrated red cherry
aromas are filled out by complex notes of root beer and
dried brush along with the sweet overlay of rich and creamy
oak. Medium-full in body and sporting the velvety texture of
Pinot, this solid effort picks up a spine of tannin by way
of structure and is less overtly acidic than many Oregonian
bottlings in these pages. A few years in bottle will see it
round and smooth out even more.” |

The sensational 2002 Shiraz (from 89-year-old vines) offers up scents of
roasted meats, beef broth, blackberries, and cassis liqueur. Its
texture, sumptuous depth, and incredible richness and purity blew me
away. Despite its huge size, it possesses tremendous equilibrium and
definition. Drink this classic South Australian Shiraz over the next
10-15 years. If you love the wines of Torbreck, you’ll also find this
wine totally compelling. Score range: 95-98. Score: 98. —Robert
Parker, October 2005. Wine Spectator
- Impressive in so many ways, not least in how it packs
layers and layers of flavor into a lithe package that never loses its
refinement. The blueberry and currant flavors submerge themselves in a
racy frame, enlivened by acidity but marked by gentle generosity on the
long finish. Best from 2009 through 2017. 520 cases made.
Score: 94. —Harvey Steiman, February 28, 2007. Tasted at home with
L, Bill and Beth C. with a 'vertical' tasting of aged cheddars from
2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. |
