Chateau St Jean Cinq Cepages 2005

Chateau St Jean
Sonoma County
Cinq Cepages  - 'Five Flavors'
Cabernet Sauvignon - blend
  2006
  2005 - Sept 11, 2009, October 9, 2009
2003 -  May 18, 2008 - WE 94 -  A classic Cinq Cépages, the 2003 vintage offers the signature chocolate-covered cherry and boysenberry aromas that have come to define this flagship Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. Lush, elegant and gracefully balanced, the wine delivers sweet plum and dark berry flavors and an exotic floral note that wraps around big, juicy tannins. This highly concentrated wine has beautiful oak integration and a lushness throughout that leads to a lingering finish.
2002 - "The 2002 Cinq Cepages is impressive. It boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as aromas of cedar, black currants, sweet cherries, licorice, and smoky oak. Medium to full-bodied, authoritatively flavored, elegant and impressively long with a velvety texture, it is already delicious and evolved but should drink well for at least another 12-14 years. RP 92 - There are some terrific values in the Chateau St. Jean portfolio. People complain, with justification, about the high prices of the finest California wines, but this winery releases some offerings that are actually under priced for what’s in the bottle. The values in this portfolio seem obvious, and the winery is to be applauded for that." - Wine Advocate
2001 - Jan 21, 2006 - Wine Spectator 92: "Beautifully crafted, dark, rich and layered, with blackberry, cherry, plum and wild berry fruit that zooms across the palate, holding a tight focus and finishing with a long, complex aftertaste. The tannins firm up nicely on the finish." Drink now through 2011. –JL
Robert Parker 90  notes: "The 2001 Cinq Cepages is an outstanding effort. A dark ruby/purple color is followed by an elegant nose of cranberries, cherries, red and black currants, smoke, and herbs. This elegant, medium to full-bodied 2001 is ideal for drinking over the next 12-13 years."
Wine Enthusiast 93: "A lovely Cab, elegant and harmonious. Strikes an even balance between cherry and blackberry flavors, smoky oak, sweet herbs, cocoa and spice. The tannins are beautifully ripe and soft. Of all these qualities, balance is foremost."
2000 - 89 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate - December 2003 - The perplexing 2000 Cinq Cepages Proprietary Red (a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot) reveals mid-ninety point aromatics ... truly a splendid bouquet that reminded me of a high-class Bordeaux St.-Emilion (dried herbs, tobacco smoke, licorice, chocolate, black currants, and cherries). However, the stunning aromas do not follow through in the mouth. This medium-bodied, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2000 starts off sweet and authoritatively on the palate, but the finish is narrow and tannic. It is typical of the 2000 vintage, which can deliver considerable fragrance, but often lacks texture and reveals a narrow, constricted aftertaste. Drink this 2000 now or cellar it for a decade.
90 points, Wine Enthusiast - May 2004 - This fine wine, which is at its best now, offers polished flavors of currants, blackberries and herbs, with smoky nuances from oak. It is smooth and polished in the mouth, with a good balance of acids and tannins. Not an ager, but complex and elegant. — S.H.
90 points, Wine Spectator - October 2003 - Smooth and harmonious, with ripe, rich, supple plum and blackberry fruit, shaded by cedar, anise, black cherry and spice attributes. Firms up and flexes its tannic strength on the finish. Very well-made. Drink now through 2010. 15,500 cases made. (JL)
1997 - Dec 16, 2000; Dec 3, 2002 - WS 96  -  'Ultrarich and chocolaty, with layers of cedar, plum, currant and black cherry, revealing uncommon depth and tiers of flavor as it picks up coffee, toffee and anise. Finishes with firm tannins.' RP 94    '...it boasts a super-complex bouquet of licorice, dried herbs, black currants, spice box, and cherry liqueur. In the mouth, notes of chocolate, new oak, and red and black fruits caress the palate in a medium to full-bodied, succulent style.'
1996 - Aug 22, 2000, Mar 9, 2000 - 1996 - Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages "The dark ruby/purple-colored 1996 Cinq Cepages (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot) exhibits a moderately intense nose of black cherries, chocolate, smoke, dried herbs, and toasty oak. As reported last year, it appears to be California's version of a big, rich St.-Emilion. Offering elegance and finesse along with copious quantities of fruit, glycerin, and flavor, this medium to full-bodied wine has evolved nicely over the last year, and can be drunk now as well as over the next 12-15 years." Reviewed by Robert Parker The Wine Advocate 92 pts
1994 - Dec 16, 2000; Dec 5, 2004, Mar 31, 2006 - WS91 - A smooth, ripe and fleshy Cabernet blend, with a pretty, concentrated core of plum, cherry, currant and wild berry flavors, and a rich, fruity aftertaste echoing the fruit and light oak. Tempting now, best after 1999. A blend: 76 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 14 percent Cabernet Franc, 5 percent Merlot, 4 percent Malbec, 1 percent Petit Verdot. RP 97 - "To my mind, the Cinq Cepages proprietary red wine offerings are not as exciting as the Reserve Merlots or Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons. The 1994 Cinq Cepages (a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot) is a very good, elegant, spicy, tasty, medium-bodied wine that just misses the bull's eye in terms of being exciting. It should drink well for 10-15 years."

  Bonny's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
1990 6 liter imperial - Wine Advocate The 1990 Bonny's Vineyard possesses a cigar box character, with considerable black cassis in its flavors. Dense and full-bodied, it exhibits exceptional extraction, plenty of glycerin, and a finish that lasts nearly a minute. Score: 94. —Robert Parker, December 1994
    1982 October 16, 2008, October 18, 2008
Winemaker's notes - The 1982 Napa Valley Bonny's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a ruby to brick-red color. The wine has an exotic nose of cassis, road tar, licorice, green peppers and rhubarb. This Cabernet has a velvety mouth feel, with flavors of red fruit and cigar box and a long finish. Enjoy now.

    1999 Sept 15, 2004
1997 Winemaker's notes - The 1997 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine of extraordinary intensity and depth. It has a very dark garnet color and a concentrated nose of cassis liqueur, plum, dark chocolate and violets. It is mouth filling and extremely rich on the palate. This Cabernet will continue to improve through 2023.
1993 RP 90: "In my October tasting both 1993 Cabernets were more tannic and closed than the 1992s. The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is one of the more tannic and backward wines I have tasted from Silver Oak. Now that it has been bottled, it has closed down, displaying far less lushness and obvious concentration than it did last year. The color remains a healthy dark ruby/purple, and the nose offers earthy, toasty new oak, and sweet black fruit aromas. Tight, yet powerful and rich, this full-bodied, dense, atypically backward Cabernet Sauvignon does not possess Silver Oak's usual approachability and precociousness. Nevertheless, this wine has plenty of merit. It should drink well after 3-5 years of cellaring, and last for 15+ years." (12/96)

    1990
    1989 Dec 31, 1992
1985 Dec 31, 1992 - 1500 -  94 points Robert Parker: "The classically-styled 1985 Napa bottling exhibits a huge, sweet, jammy, cassis, and toasty nose that soars from the glass. Full-bodied, soft, and velvety-textured, with outstanding concentration and a smooth as silk finish, this fully mature wine is capable of lasting another 10-15 years." (04/95)
1982 1500 WS: Deep ruby colored, full-bodied and full of ripe, clean cassis and mint flavors, of great depth, elegance and finesse, this is one of the greatest Silver Oak wines we've ever tasted. 96 POINTS.

1996 RP 92 - The dark ruby-colored 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley exhibits a pronounced smoky, espresso bean, and kirsch-scented nose. Round, dense, rich, full-bodied, and open-knit, its low acid flavors are undeniably appealing. Black olives make an appearance in the wine's aromatics as it sits in the glass. Anticipated maturity: now-2015.
1993 April 7, 2003 - RP 90 The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley offers up a whiff of herbs in its tight nose, followed by chocolatey, spicy, black-cherry, and cassis flavors, an exotic, medium to full-bodied, concentrated palate, and moderate tannin in the lusty finish. It does not possess the definition and structure of the Napa cuvee, but it is more forward and fleshy. These All-American Cabernet Sauvignons continue to be "can't miss" propositions with the majority of Cabernet lovers. The full-bodied 1993 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers peppery, blackcurrant-scented aromas, as well as gobs of cherry and cassis fruit. Approachable now, it should drink well for 10-20 years as I detect more tannin and structure.
1991 Aug 21,2005, Dec 25, 2005, July 11, 2008 - 92 points Robert Parker: "The 1991 boasts a dark ruby color, a rich, ostentatious, sweet vanillin, herb, and blackcurrant-scented nose, and gobs of rich, herb-tinged, juicy fruit, the opulent texture that Silver Oak routinely obtains. There is plenty of fat, glycerin, and alcohol in the long finish. Both wines are already delicious, and will age gracefully for 12-15 years." 91 points Wine Spectator: "Lavishly oaked, with an herb and dill edge to the currant and berry fruit. It is a rich and harmonious style, with layers of flavor. Firmly tannic, it can stand cellaring into 1998 to 2000 and still be massive."

The 1990 Alexander Valley Cabernet offers aromas of fruitcake, black-cherries, cassis, and spice. Dense, rich, opulent, and supple, this is a wine to drink during its first 10-12 years of life. Score: 91. —Robert Parker, October 1994.
Winemaker’s Tasting Notes - The 1990 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a medium ruby-red color with bricking on the edge and a nose of blueberry, iris blossom, licorice and allspice. This wine has a smoky, sweet attack, a juicy mouth feel and a lingering, sweet finish. Enjoy now through 2012.

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes - The 1986 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a medium ruby-red color, with a sweet nose of blackberry, chocolate and dill. This Cabernet is smooth, elegant and balanced with a medium-long fruity finish. Enjoy now through 2010.

1985 Winemakers notes - The 1985 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a medium ruby-red color with slight bricking on the edges. This wine has an expressive nose of ripe black cherry, caramel and nutmeg. This Cabernet has a luscious mouth feel and medium body with echoes of fruit flavors and a long, smooth finish. Enjoy now through 2010.
    1982 October 17, 2008
Wine Spectator 90: "Supple and subtle, an elegantly structured wine that's almost ready to drink." (02/87) - Magnums and six liter Imperial.

Winemakers' notes: The 1982 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a garnet to ruby-red color. This wine has a lovely nose of cassis, chocolate, rose petals and tar. It has rich, complex flavors of cassis and ginger. This Cabernet has a medium body with echoes of fruit flavors and a medium long finish. Enjoy now. Last tasted June 2004.

1981  - Magnum - Winemakers's Notes - The 1981 Alexander Valley has a light ruby color with red pepper and spice in the nose. It is light bodied with some fruit on the palate. This wine is starting to peak and would be best enjoyed now. Due to limited supply in our library this wine was last tasted June 2004. May need decanting due to light sediment and some bottle to bottle variation is apparent in this vintage.

This is a huge, dark brooding wine with terrific extract for a Pinot Noir. Like many Oregon Pinots this one has real Burgundy style as opposed to the flamboyant, fruit bomb American style. Connoisseur’s Guide had this to say about the previous vintage: 2002 SINEANN Pinot Noir Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine  Volume 28 Issue 12: October 2004 Rated 91 -  “ Nicely concentrated red cherry aromas are filled out by complex notes of root beer and dried brush along with the sweet overlay of rich and creamy oak. Medium-full in body and sporting the velvety texture of Pinot, this solid effort picks up a spine of tannin by way of structure and is less overtly acidic than many Oregonian bottlings in these pages. A few years in bottle will see it round and smooth out even more.”

From a heavy thick bottle - rich, thick, full bodied, dark ink color - blackberry, black raspberry, hints of blueberry and spicy currant, turn to cassis and a hint of glycerin on the full finish. Other Reviews - Wine Advocate - The sensational 2002 Shiraz (from 89-year-old vines) offers up scents of roasted meats, beef broth, blackberries, and cassis liqueur. Its texture, sumptuous depth, and incredible richness and purity blew me away. Despite its huge size, it possesses tremendous equilibrium and definition. Drink this classic South Australian Shiraz over the next 10-15 years. If you love the wines of Torbreck, you’ll also find this wine totally compelling. Score range: 95-98. Score: 98. —Robert Parker, October 2005. Wine Spectator - Impressive in so many ways, not least in how it packs layers and layers of flavor into a lithe package that never loses its refinement. The blueberry and currant flavors submerge themselves in a racy frame, enlivened by acidity but marked by gentle generosity on the long finish. Best from 2009 through 2017. 520 cases made. Score: 94. —Harvey Steiman, February 28, 2007.  Tasted at home with L, Bill and Beth C. with a 'vertical' tasting of aged cheddars from 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.
