Robert Parker (WA 96-98) says "This nearly perfect wine,...
(60- to 90-year-old vines)...Its gorgeously sweet, pure nose
of crushed rocks, blueberries, cassis, and minerals soars from
the glass. Floral-like black and blue fruits, an inky/purple
color, and nearly endless depth and persistence on the palate
are the stuff of legends. With extraordinary equilibrium,
precision, and purity, it represents the apogee of Ben
Glaetzer’s winemaking talents." |

Les Origines |

2005 |

95 Pts., Robert Parker/Wine Advocate. -
Showing fabulously well, and better than I predicted, the
2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines is one of the
vintage's great successes, and still very reasonably priced
for a wine of such quality. Dense saturated ruby/purple in
color, it offers up a nose of melted licorice, roasted meat,
tar, graphite, and oodles of blackberry and sweet cherry
fruit. Quite full-bodied, with good acidity, moderate
tannins, and a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, the wine has
superb balance, fabulous concentration, and a long, long
finish.
The tannins suggest 2-3 years of
bottle age would be appropriate, but the wine can be drunk
now, although it should also evolve for up to two decades.
This is definitely a modernist take on Chateauneuf du Pape,
but the wines never lose the soul and typicity of Provence.
They are impeccably well-made, pure, and deeply colored.

Spectator: "Brilliant and youthful raspberry color. Subtle
aromas of raspberries and spices. Full-bodied, with firm
tannins and long, silky-textured, minty, berry finish. Not
the longest-lived Gruaud, but who cares? Very fine. Drink
now through 2010." (05/99)
RP - 89 - "...a deep ruby/purple color (but not the
opaqueness of the 1990), more obvious tannin, without the
mid-palate and sweet inner-core of fruit exhibited by the
1990. It is a big, tannic, spicy wine, with plenty of
potential..." (89 points) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

- The dark ruby/garnet-colored 1985 Gruaud-Larose
has evolved beautifully. It exhibits a lovely, sweet,
fragrant bouquet of berry fruit, truffles, earth, and smoky
oak. On the palate, the wine is fat, long, forward for
Gruaud, medium to full bodied, and deep. This is one of the
few Gruauds to drink well from bottle. Anticipated maturity:

WS 94 - "Superb Bordeaux, perhaps one of the best ever from
this estate. Deeply colored, with wonderful berry and violet
aromas and similar flavors. Shows great restraint and style.

Spectator (Wine Spectator, 08/31/1992)
"Very dark, blackish crimson. Ah, well, Bisto! Only Brits
wil understand this reference but just one smell is enough
to establish this wine as an absolute stonker compared with
everything that has gone before. Fantastic complex bouquet
wth ripeness, gunshot, game, mellow sweetness on the front
palate. Enormous charm. Great succulence and delicacy. Long
and layered. Just so neat and complex ? the very finest
Indian ink. Long and gorgeous." (19 points)

"...complex, perfumed aromas of plum, leather, meat and
minerals. Sweet, lush and young; really stuffed with fat,
meaty fruit. Broad without being really thick, with
impressive precision of fruit...Finishes with big, ripe
tannins and palate-staining sweet fruit..." (94 points)
