Dec 31, 2003 - Mitolo G.A.M
McLaren Vale Shiraz 2002 RP 95-97 RM 92 $49 Intense forward powerfully ripe
blackberry and spicy smoky pepper that lingers on and on. My take on
it reflects RP's review of the '01 moreso than the '02 except I agree with
his comment on the camphor and graphite (?). Remarkably, very late on the
finish, there is a hint of that McLaren Vale Blueberry (see Dead Arm) but it
is earlier it is overshadowed by the pepper. |
Parker says of the 2002, "Produced
from 26-year old vines and aged in French oak (80% new), the 2002 Shiraz G.
A. M. reveals tremendous fruit purity, but it does not yet reveal secondary
nuances. The inky blue/purple color is accompanied by aromas of ink,
camphor, graphite, blackberries, and blueberries. While it possesses
tremendous purity as well as an enormous full-bodied texture, it is neither
heavy nor overbearing. This stunning Shiraz may be even better than the 2002
Savitar. Time will tell. Barrel samples of three 2002s revealed tremendous
potential in what appears to be the finest efforts Mitolo has yet produced.
There are 300-400 cases of each, and all three are scheduled to be bottled
in October. Kudos to young importer (31 years old!) Ben Hammerschlag for
unearthing these potential superstars." 95-97 points Robert Parker

Parker says of the 2001, 'the formidable 2001 Shiraz GAM exhibits a more
saturated purple in addition to classic aromas of French oak intermingled
with blackberry liqueur, pepper and spice. Full-bodied, rich and intense
with admirable balance, elegance and overall harmony'.
