Aug
7, 2004 - d’Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz
2002 - Not
yet rated. RM 93 $59 - This might've warranted a higher rating were it not
for the slight mineral or almost metallic like taste that creeps in
occasionally. I say occasionally because this wine is like a heavyweight
price fight dueling between blueberry, white pepper, and this mineral taste
being predominant over the course of an evening. In any event its a big
fruit bomb that aims to please. While not yet rated, RP describes the Dead
Arm this way... "The nose shows intense and complex cedary, fig, blackberry
and blueberry like smells occasionally pepper/spice smells too. Vanilla
mocha oak smells and attacking blackberry, cassis characters are also
evident on the palate. Full, intense sweet, cedary middle palate flavours
have a distinctly silky, svelte texture deceptively disguises the rich
powerful cassis and toffee-mocha flavours. The accent is on powerful
full-bodied berry fruit flavour, with a little sweet English toffee- like
oak evident on the juicy, rolling finish. |
March, 2004 -
The Dead Arm McLaren Vale Shiraz 2001- RP gave this a 98 rating. Dead Arm is
known for rich ripe full forward fruit. The 2001 vintage is
especially full and rich and fruitfilled. RP
review -"One of the greatest examples of this
cuvee. Its dense black/purple color is
accompanied by celestial aromas of melted
licorice, graphite, blackberries, cassis incense,
anise, and toasty oak. Fabulously concentrated. Drink
2008-2033. |
Dec 23, 2003 -
The Dead Arm McLaren Vale Shiraz1999 - WS 91 RM 91 $65 Lacking that
distinctive blueberry from some of the earlier vintages, this Dead Arm is
dark and full with forward fruit of big cherry and berry with a big long
finish of spice and a bit of that creme brulee although not as pronounced as
the Marquis Phillips Shiraz
'9' of this vintage. The 2000 and 2001 got 98+ and
94 ratings from Parker. |
Dec 06, 2003 -
The Custodian McLaren Vale Grenache 1996 - WS RM 86
$23 (Purchased at La Cantina, Tra Vigne, St.
Helena, Napa Valley) Dark current and berry with smoky cedar on a full finish. Tasted at home with L, Bill &
Beth C, joined by Bob & Gloria L. |
Sept 1, 1999 - The Dead
Arm McLaren Vale Shiraz 1995 WS 92 RM 93 $45 (Yes you read it right - you have to read the label
or check their website to get the story full behind the name - it
has to do with a fungus affecting very old vines and reducing one arm to
dry rot leaving only one arm to produce exceptionally rich fruit) This one is an
experience! And its available. Huge flavor - powerful fruit - blueberries
- believe it or not! AJ turned me on to this one. |
