Feb 28, 2004 - Caymus Napa Valley Estate Cabernet
Sauvignon 1999 $75
Cherry, currant and anise with a smokey mocha and earthy finish that
falls off too quickly.
RM 89. |
Oct 18, 2003 - Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet
Sauvignon 1991 WS 93 RM 86 $65 Waited too long? Still holding
the Special Select that got a huge rating (99) for this vintage. A hint
remains of black cherry giving way to smokey earthiness setting in
perhaps taking over the fruit due to age. Lends credence to arguments that
this label tends to be over-rated and over-priced. |
Feb 22, 2003 - Summary
highlights of California Cabernet tasting
event at
DG Wineshop - Flight included:
Caymus Special Select 1998, Dominus 1999,
Fisher Coach Insignia 1999, Heitz Trailside 1997, Justin Isosecles
1999, Mayacamas 1997, Showket 1998, Stonehedge 1997, Ristow 1998/99,
and Rodney Strong Symmetry 1998.
Several of the group of 40+ tasters favored the Isosceles and the
Mayacamas. My ranking was topped by the Caymus, clearly the most
sophisticated wine with a broad symphony of polished and well balanced
flavors of currant, blackberry, leather and plum with a huge long smooth
finish - RM 93-94. See
pictures of the evening and more comments on my
FORUM. |

March 17, 2000 - Caymus 1996
Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley (WS 90) (RM92) ($70) Smooth,
soft, full fruit with a black cherry, currant, pear, and toasty oak flavor
and a nice finish. While this wine is wonderful and plentiful with 26k cases
produced its overpriced relative to the wealth of quality selections
available for less however on the Omaha Prime wine list in Omaha its the
best selection and a good value. No Special Selection was produced in 96 so
the 'select' grapes are found in the Estate. WS says it lacks complexity and
fullness relative to other vintages but I found it very much in character to
my other tasting experiences such as the 91 vintage which I hold in my
cellar. Rick w/ Bob G., Ann K., Cathy R., Steve H., Dan C. |
