- RP 99 - Tasted
20 Times Since Bottling With Consistent Notes The 1982 is
Chateau
Margaux at its most opulent and decadent. The
opaque purple/garnet color is followed by a bouquet that
soars from the glass, offering scents of roasted
blackcurrants, herbs (thyme), licorice, and spring flowers.
Magnificently concentrated and expansive on the palate, this
voluptuously styled, huge, lavishly rich, overwhelming style
of Chateau Margaux is almost too much of a
good thing. Its low acidity and huge tannins in the finish
make it approachable, so I would not quibble with anyone who
wants to drink it. But do not forget that this wine should
have at least 25-35 years of evolution. If indeed it turns
out to be a clone of this estate's legendary 1900, it may
have 3-4 times the longevity I have suggested. 99 pts.

There are 1,500 cases of this blockbuster. Its
inky plum/purple color is followed by sumptuous

points Robert Parker: "Amazingly, the 2005 Carnival of Love
ratchets up the level of quality. A selection of the finest
Shiraz barrels, it boasts an extraordinary black/purple
color, gorgeous notes of blackberry liqueur, camphor, and
smoke, and an enormous voluptuousness that would make even
Pamela Anderson jealous. Great purity, symmetry, and harmony
as well as remarkable balance for such a rich, intense wine,
as it sat in the glass espresso, vanillin, white chocolate,
and additional black fruits also emerged. It should drink
well for a decade, although the winemakers suggest it be
consumed over the next four years. If you are wondering what
to serve with this beauty, Sarah and Sparky Marquis
recommend such fish as marlin, hammerhead, and great white
shark, white meats such as snake and crocodile, red meats
such as emu and kangaroo, and aged wallaby mild cheese.

RP 96 - Wine
Advocate Review
The 2005 Enchanted Path (66% Shiraz and 34% Cabernet
Sauvignon aged in primarily American oak, 60% new) is
fashioned from relatively young vines. It reveals an amazing
opaque purple/blue/black color (always a hallmark of Marquis
wines), a full-bodied, powerful, smoky nose, extravagant
layers of fruit, spice, glycerin, and extract, full body,
superb intensity, tremendous richness, and a seamless
personality. It is a textbook example of a southern
Australian red at its richest, fullest, and most pure. For
consumers with open minds and progressive palates, this
amazing red should age beautifully for 10-15 years.
Wine Tasting Notes
This is a beautiful example of two varietals blended to
become one. The nose is rich and powerful, with lifted
blackberry, plum and spice aromas. As you sip, your palate
is filled with immense flavor that physically explodes in
your mouth. With an elegant, silky smooth texture, this wine
lingers in your mouth long after the sip has gone. |

Full-bodied, beautifully textured and layered with an
awesome finish, it should drink well for 4-6+ years. Two

"The 2005 Two Left Feet is a 65% Shiraz, 19% Merlot, and 16%
Cabernet Sauvignon blend assembled by Sarah Marquis. The
fruit is sourced from McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and Langhorne
Creek, and the wine is aged for 9-12 months in a combination
of American and French oak (about 50% new and 50% one-year
old). It boasts an inky/purple color, superb intensity, a
big, sweet, full-bodied nose of creme de cassis, graphite,
white chocolate, black olives, blackberry liqueur, and
spice, and a spectacular, voluptuous, even unctuous texture.
This is a big, powerful, classic southern Australian red
made with no compromises. The good news is that there are
6,500 cases of this superb value. Drink it over the next 3-4
years, although I suspect it will last for a decade or

RP - Outstanding.
Splendidly concentrated, broad, expansively-flavored,
full-bodied Cabernet with a high level of tannin. Its stunning

wrapped in toasty oak is impressive. A 20-30 year wine."

Bo Barrett,
Winemaker Notes -
The color is very
dark ruby, almost black and the aromas have very intense,
typical Montelena Estate characteristics of earthy, berry
complex that is the hallmark of our vineyard. Interestingly,
the cedar tones from the volcanic soils at the eastern side of
the vineyard and the black olive from the richer soils are
evident as background notes to the bouquet. The palate is
also very full flavored with earth and berry, black cherry and
plum. The wine is very complex and has fairly long flavor
development. The structure is still slightly drying but will
soften quickly over the next 12 months before settling down to
a more even rate of maturation in the bottle.
We see a nice big tannin feel without any roughness due to our
new and better de-stemmer. We think that, like all our
previous vintages of Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, this one will
reward those who wish to age it further, but the 1990
Montelena Estate represents for us a new benchmark for its
balance of supple texture with full concentration of ripe
fruit flavor. |

Label - RM Review - The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which
could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine
boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain
grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is

Parker # 109 (2/1/1997) : 90 Maturity:
2004-2015
After less than persuasive performances in two potentially
great years, 1989 and 1990, Mouton-Rothschild appears to have
settled down, producing fine efforts in recent vintages,
culminating with the enormously promising, unquestionably
profound 1995. This beautifully made wine could be considered a
sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color,
followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and
cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the
mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage

surprisingly rich 1993 is capable of 15-20 years of evolution.
Readers should note that this wine comes with two labels. The
original label, with its delicate yet unprovocative portrait
nude of a pre-teenager by Balthus, was banned as a result of
protests from America's neo-puritans. What has resulted is
considerable speculation in the original label, which is selling
at $50 more than the blank creamy white-colored label that is
"officially" sported by those bottles of Mouton-Rothschild
imported to America. Although Mouton-Rothschild can be among the
most inconsistent first-growths, when this estate gets
everything right, the wine can be as compelling as any produced
in Bordeaux
Wine Spectator (1/31/1996) : 90
Mouton comes through again. Impressive '93, deep in color and
full-bodied, boasting plenty of currant, black cherry, mint and
toast character. Well crafted, showing depth for this vintage.
Give the tannins some time to mellow.

Robert Parker - 100
Imposing! One of largest "the Sheep". Imposing, imperial,
imposing, pure, quite simply magic! This wine is a synonym
of perfection. Offering an exceptional bouquet and a dense
and extremely intense color, the 1986 Mouton Rothschild is a
fabulous Bordeaux wine. However, to fully appreciate this
splendor you should wait a few more years in order to allow
this vintage to reach maturity. Label designed by B.
Sejourné.
100 points Robert Parker: "An enormously concentrated,
massive Mouton-Rothschild, comparable in quality, but not
style, to the 1982, 1959, and 1945, this impeccably made
wine is still in its infancy. Interestingly, when I was in
Bordeaux several years ago, I had this wine served to me
blind from a magnum that had been opened and decanted 48
hours previously. Even then, it still tasted like a barrel
sample! I suspect the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild requires a
minimum of 15-20 more years of cellaring; it has the
potential to last for 50-100 years! Given the outrageously
high prices being fetched by so many of the great 1982s and
1990s (and lest I forget, the 1995 Bordeaux futures), it
appears this wine might still be one of the 'relative
bargains' in the fine wine marketplace." |

1985
- The Wine Advocate 90 pts - "The rich,
complex, well-developed bouquet of oriental spices, toasty
oak, herbs, and ripe fruit is wonderful. On the palate, the
wine is also rich, forward, long, and sexy. It ranks behind
both Haut-Brion and Chateau Margaux in 1985. I am surprised
by how evolved and ready to drink this wine is. Readers
looking for a big, boldly constructed Mouton should search
out other vintages, as this is a tame, forward,
medium-weight wine that is close to full maturity. It is
capable of lasting another 15+ years. This estate compares
their 1985 to their 1959, but to me it is more akin to their
1962 or 1953. Anticipated maturity: Now-2012. Last tasted,
10/97." |

1982 -
Robert Parker 100 pts - Perfect! A magnificent offering is
experienced in this delicate and dense vintage. Its intense
tannins and various aromas of blackcurrant, spices,
liquorice and nuts provide a complex and concentrated
bouquet. Label designed by John Huston. WS 99 |

1970 -
Robert Parker 93 pts -
Though volatile in character,
when the 1970 is at it's best, it is absolutely at its best.
This Mouton Rothschild demands for a long decanting period.
After some time, it unleashes an elegant bouquet of rare
spices, tobacco, minerals, and blackcurrant aromas, which
are all harnessed by its succulent and rigid structure.
Label designed by Marc Chagall. |
