      | Genealogy of R.E. McNees Family
       | |
      | Background - This data is taken from
McNeese - McNees Family History  - The Brothers Three -
Joab - Joseph - Jehu and their Descendents; Researched, compiled and
indexed by Henrietta McNeese McMenama of Lexington, Kentucky, published in
1983 by the Lexington Copy Center, 1974 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington,
Kentucky. She visited with my grandmother,
      Zelma Mae Hurst McNees of
Farmland, Indiana in compiling this data and
presented to her a copy of the book in 1984. Some interesting
McNees Family Lore is included on a separate page. The immigrant
      Isaiah McNeise
arrived in Philadephia, July 24, 1736 with a letter from Coote Hill,
County Cavan Ireland dated February 21, 1736. McNeise, a widower with a
large number of children, said that he had lived in County Cavan for the
past 20 years and was a Quaker in good standing. He was born in 1677. He
was known to have five sons: John, Sr., James, William, Samuel and Henry,
all born in Ireland. There was no known McNeise in the Colony prior to
1684 and none took the oath in the State of Pennsylvania between 1779 and
1789. All of the McNeise's in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and
South Carolina were believed to descend from this one immigrant.
Most of these families moved from Cumberland County, Lancaster,
Pennsylvania on to Lunenburg, Charlotte County, Virginia. Then, in 1770
most moved onward to the 96th district of South Carolina. The 96th
District formed from Craven County discontinued in 1785. Laurens County,
South Carolina formed from the 96th District in 1785. The parents of
      Joab, Joseph and
Jehu McNees and the parents of
      Sarah McCollum
sought shelter at Fort Sullivan, South Carolina, near the  city of
Charleston, for protection from British and Indian raids. Joab McNees was
      born at Fort Sullivan.
      Joab W. McNees
and his family moved to Washington County, Tennessee and on to Randolph
County, Indiana, settling in Stony Creek Township, near Georgetown in
1829. Joab and Sarah had sixteen children, 12 were grown, and ten married.
He moved eleven of the children from Washington County, Tennesee to
Indiana. In those days it took 28 days to travel from Tennessee to
Randolph County, Indiana. The fifth child of Joab and Sarah (McCollum) was
      Joseph McNeese. | |
