Caymus Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Caymus
Napa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon
2008

Caymus stood out as most approachable, velvety smooth and ready to drink in a best of California tasting. RM 93.

93 points Wine Spectator: "Open fruit, rich, lush and layered, serving up a complex mix of plum, blackberry, black licorice and spices. Full-bodied and supple-textured, ending with a long, persistent finish that keeps repeating the core flavor themes. Drink now through 2018."

St Emilion
2005
Merlot 65%, 30% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
July 24, 2010 - Chateau Larmande Grand Cru Classe St Emilion 2005: RM 91- My best of tasting pick from an earlier Bordeaux flight tasting. Medium bodied, floral perfume, flavorful red berry, plum fruits, subtle spice, cherry-cranberry, nice texture and an appealing moderately firm grip of tannin in the finish. A great '05 Bordeaux for drinking in the near-term; a great value for such an elegant wine.

The 2005 Bordeaux vintage was so good that even 'lesser'  labels were outstanding - if you call a Grand Cru Classe a lesser label.
92 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of ripe fruit, coffee bean and sweet tobacco follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a long, balanced finish. Rich and layered. Best after 2013." (03/08)

Robert Craig Mt Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Robert Craig
Mt Veeder
Napa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon
2007
May 27, 2010 - 2007 is turning out to be a remarkable year for Robert Craig - Could this be the best Robert Craig Mt Veeder ever? The 2007 (RM 94) is huge - firm tannins are very refined and hence very approachable - not overpowering - not for the feint of heart however! The huge forward fruits stood up to the tannins sufficiently to render this a delicious extremely enjoyable wine.  The winemaker notes sum it up perfectly - "Intense, gorgeous aromas of blackberry and black currant followed by dark chocolate, vanilla bean and creme de cassis. Flavors: An explosion of juicy, rich Mt. Veeder black fruit underlain with more cassis, pencil lead, cocoa, and cedar.
Finish: A huge concentration of fruit flows through on the palate, enlivened by bracing acidity and enveloped in refined, sweet mountain tannins." 83% Cabernet Sauvignon 17% Merlot

Reserve Merlot
The Wine Advocate, Issue # 174, December 28, 2007 -  92 Points An outstanding effort, the 2005 Merlot Reserve Mailbox Vineyard retains the elegant style, but ratchets up the level of concentration and complexity. A fragrant, red currant, sweet cherry, roasted herb, and mocha-infused nose is followed by a full-bodied wine with lovely elegance, finesse, sweet tannins, and long, layered fruit flavors that cascade over the palate with no hard edges. It should drink well for 10-12 years.

Chateau Pontet Canet
Pauillac
Bordeaux
2005
Berry Bros & Rudd report. Owner Alfred Tesseron has produced an utterly extraordinary wine in 2005. The verdict was unanimous amongst our buying team: it was without question the best Pontet-Canet anyone could ever remember tasting. With incredible silky tannins, and perfect balance, this has everything you could ever want from a wine. Creamy strawberries and blackberries, great structure and an incredibly precise shape, lead to a spellbounding finish that makes your tongue tingle. Tasting this wine is one of those experiences where you wonder how a few grapes can be transformed into such an elixir. Unmissable. Drink 2020-2050. Parker Score: 94-96/100.  Berrys Score: 19.5/20.

2004
Feb 14, 2006 - RM 94 RP 95 RP review - Drink 2005-2012. The blockbuster 2004 Shiraz was aged 18 months in French oak (40% new). It is a wine of great intensity, with an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of camphor, graphite, blackberries, tar, and charcoal. Rich, super-pure fruit cascades over the palate of this opaque purple-colored, full-bodied, voluptuously-textured Shiraz. Consume it over the next 6-7 years. RM - Deep dark purple - big nose; huge full bodied mouthful of layers of currant and blackberry with a moderating red raspberry/vanilla on the long long full finish.

Delicious mouthfull of currant and black cherry with tones of sweet creme brulee and cotton candy and a pleasant balanced finish. Region/Appellation:

Price:

$100

A monumental effort, the 2001 Rieussec boasts a light to medium gold color in addition to a fabulous perfume of honeysuckle, smoky oak, caramelized tropical fruits, creme brulee, and Grand Marnier. The wine is massive and full-bodied yet neither over the top nor heavy because of good acidity. With intense botrytis as well as a 70-75-second finish, this amazing Sauternes will be its apogee between 2010-2035." 99/100 points. (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Jun-2004)
March 2005
Producer RP 97 RM 94 Wow. Reminiscent of my reviews of Marquis Phillips '9', but on steroids. No wonder since Sparky Marquis is also the winemaker of this monstrous wine as well. Dark, full, thick extracted fruit - huge mouth-full of currant and blackberry gives way to caramel and creme brulee burnt sugar with a smoky sweet oak and vanilla finish. See what Robert Parker says about this bomb. - "The 2002 Shiraz Reserve tastes like a dry vintage port. It may be too much for those with a European palate (but then, Im a Francophile with a European-styled palate and I loved it). It is flamboyant, extraordinarily rich, full-bodied, and intense, with gobs of blackberry and currant fruit backed up by extravagant levels of glycerin. The oak is largely concealed by the magnificent wealth of fruit. This is classic Australian Shiraz at its finest and is not duplicated anywhere else in the world, so enjoy it for what it is. It should drink well for a decade. 97 points, The Wine Advocate. I bought this wine out of state upon release before it was rated. Nice surprise when I went to pick it up eighteen months later after the RP rating and the price had nearly doubled.

WS 97  -  Big and powerful, brimming with tarry, spicy black cherry, dark plum, blackberry and chocolate flavors. Rich and gooey like a warm flourless chocolate cake, yet it finds a plush balance that keeps it from veering off into heaviness. This has grace, harmony and refinement, without losing an ounce of power. Drink now through 2025. RM 92 - UNCLE. I actually found this almost too much forward-in-your-face fruit; Bam - powerful. Wow. Intense currant, blackberry, plum with a full richness almost tasting of cognac giving way to a smoky tar lingering finish. I wonder what this will be like in 15-20 years!I hope to find out.

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon

$90

The dark ruby-colored 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (3,150 cases) contains 3% Cabernet Franc. This spectacular wine explodes from the glass with loads of flowers (mostly violets), cassis, black cherries, blackberries, and underlying fresh herbs. Feeling like liquid satin on the palate, it is broad, densely-packed, and has stupendous depth. A refined effort, its medium to full-bodied personality is crammed with highly-detailed black fruits and loads of exquisitely ripe tannin. In addition, the taster has the distinct feeling that this wine is holding much of its fruit in reserve...This blockbuster has it all. Projected maturity: 2007-2018.  Rating 98+. Chateau Montrose

If ever there was any doubt that the wines of St Estphe had triumphed in 2003 then a taste of this magnificent wine immediately put the record straight. A wonderful nose of ripe, pure Cabernet Sauvignon with layers of spicy oak introduces a palate that is at once intense, multi-dimensional, loaded with minerals, black cherries, firm acidity and powerful tannins, all singing in perfect harmony. This is definitely a contender for wine of the vintage and possibly the best Montrose ever made, surpassing its 2000 and possibly even its legendary 1990. Drink 2012-2040. BBR Rating 19/20

Another 2003 Bordeaux Comments: From BBR

Producer:

This majestic Rieussec provides further proof, if any were needed, of the fantastic quality of the sumptuous 2003 Sauternes. This also restores this noble estate, owned by the Rothschild family (from the Lafite line), to its position behind only Ch. dYquem in the Sauternes hierarchy. Tingling aromas of pineapple, honey and lemon are replicated on the phenomenally concentrated and powerful palate, lifted by fresh acidity, and enhanced by a cornucopia of flavours: dried apricots, dates and tangerines and hints of ginger. A monstrously impressive wine in every sense. Drink 2010-2035 BBR Rating - 18.5/20

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown (2,150 cases of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc) is spectacular. WS 93. This is one of my perennial favorites going back ten years. Made from grapes grown on 50-100 year old vineyards, this McLaren Vale classic is matured nearly two years in new American oak prior to bottling. The richly textured fruit and deep, velvety tannins interweave beautifully into a long, harmonious finish. 15 years plus cellaring potential.

March  2004 Comments:

Producer: RP gave this a 98 rating. Dead Arm is known for rich ripe full forward fruit. The 2001 vintage is especially full and rich and fruitfilled.

Clos du Marquis St Julien Bordeaux Producer: 2000 Bordeaux - a classic collectable vintage. WS sums it up in their review - "The nose shows loads of plum, spice and meat aromas, as well as hints of licorice. It's full-bodied, with firm, yet velvety textured tannins. It's big and rounded. If you can't afford Las Cases, try some of this. Some might call this a second wine, but it comes from a plot of vineyards not deemed worthy of Loville Las Cases. So it's like its own estate.   Producer: 96 points Robert Parker Jr - Racheting up the level of concentration, intensity, flamboyance as well as structure is the 2001 Shiraz Old Bastard. Although expensive, it is produced from 110-year old vines, and represents one of the great classics from Barossa. When compared to the price of a wine such as Penfolds Grange, it is a reasonably good bargain. The inky purple color is accompanied by gorgeous aromas of smoke, camphor, melted licorice, blackberries, cherries, and flowers. Dense, rich, and full-bodied with the wood well-concealed beneath spectacular concentration and extract, there is not a hard edge to be found in this old vine Barossa Shiraz. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.
